Multiple choice questions are automatically marked, show real-time response data, and support pre-written automatic feedback. They work well in regular Sessions, check-ins, and tests.
Set up the question
Find the Multiple choice widget in the Questions section of the content bar in Prepare mode. If the content bar is not visible, click the Add content tab on the right edge of the page.
Writing the question
The question field supports the full rich text toolbar, including text formatting, special characters, and mathematical notation. See Add text to a Session for a complete guide to available tools.
Use formatting to help students navigate the question. Common approaches include bolding cognitive verbs, italicising context clues, and using a numbered list for multi-part questions.
If the Session is an assessment, adjust the mark value for the question. All questions default to 1 mark. If the Session is not an assessed quiz or test, this field can be ignored.
Add answer options
Type answer options into the fields below the question. There is no limit to the number of options, and more than one can be correct. New fields appear automatically as existing ones are filled. Blank fields are not shown to students.
Answer options support basic formatting (bold and italics) and a maths tool.
Click the tick or cross next to each option to mark it as correct or incorrect.
Add automatic feedback (optional)
Type feedback into the red and green bubbles beneath each answer option. Students see only the feedback for the options they selected after submitting their work. Release feedback and answers to show them all feedback on the question.
Randomise answer order (optional)
Turn on Randomise to shuffle the order of answer options for each student. This is off by default. Randomising is useful when building questions quickly (enter correct answers first, then let Stile shuffle them) or during assessments to reduce the value of over-the-shoulder glances.
Mark as a Key question or Challenge (optional)
In the Settings tab, you can flag the question as a Key question or Challenge. These flags are optional and should not be applied to every question. Key questions assess a specific learning goal. Challenges are harder than the rest of the Session. See Key questions and Challenge questions.
Click Done when the question is set up.
Pro tip: Multiple choice is compatible with the Side by side layout widget. Place it next to an image or diagram to enrich the question.
Auto-marking and partial marks
Multiple choice questions are automatically marked. The marking algorithm rewards correct selections and does not reward guessing.
A student receives full marks if they select all correct options and no incorrect ones.
A student receives partial marks if they select some correct options and no incorrect ones.
A student receives 0 marks if they select any incorrect option, regardless of how many correct options they also selected.
Example: A question has 3 correct answers worth 1 mark total. A student selects 2 correct options and 0 incorrect options and receives 0.67 marks. Another student selects 1 correct option and 1 incorrect option and receives 0 marks.
How students interact with the question
Students see the question and answer options, but not the tick/cross markings or any automatic feedback while working.
Students click the tick boxes to the left of each answer option to make their selections.
After submitting a non-assessed Session, students can see how their responses were marked. Incorrect responses do not reveal the correct answer. Students can take back their work and try again.
On assessments, students see no feedback (including ticks and crosses) until you release answers and feedback, and then all feedback is available.
Review responses in Teach mode
In Teach mode, click Show responses on a question to display a bar graph showing how many students selected each option. Use Show answers at the same time to reveal the correct/incorrect markings. Hover over an answer option to see which students selected it.
Review responses in Analyse mode
In Analyse mode, multiple choice questions display a colour-coded bar graph showing the number of students who answered correctly, incorrectly, and did not answer, out of the total Class. Click the question to see a detailed breakdown of individual responses, or click a student's name to go directly to their worksheet.
