Please note, accommodation businesses have an additional set of Accessibility attributes for guests in wheelchairs. (See Physical - Wheelchair (Accommodation-only) attributes)
Wheelchair Attributes
The following list explains in further detail each of the Wheelchair Attributes that can be added to your Profile.
Have step free outdoor pathways
Providing step-free outdoor pathways, including access to picnic areas, barbecues, and shelters, ensures that all visitors, including those using wheelchairs or mobility aids, can enjoy outdoor spaces without barriers. For example, a park with smooth, level pathways allows everyone to easily reach picnic tables and barbecue areas.
Have a doorbell or intercom at an accessible height and display a contact number
Installing a doorbell or intercom at an accessible height, between 900mm and 1100mm from the ground, and displaying a contact number ensures that individuals using wheelchairs or those who cannot reach higher can easily alert staff or gain entry. For instance, placing an accessible intercom at a building entrance allows all guests to conveniently request assistance.
Have a step-free main entrance to the building and/or reception area
Ensuring a step-free main entrance with ramps or slopes no steeper than a 1:14 gradient provides easy and safe access for people using wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers. For example, a hotel entrance with a gradual ramp and no steps allows all guests to enter the building independently.
Have step-free access to restaurant, lounge and bar
Providing step-free access to dining areas, lounges, and bars ensures that all guests, including those with mobility impairments, can enjoy these spaces without difficulty. For instance, a restaurant with wide, step-free doorways and accessible pathways allows everyone to move comfortably through the space.
Have step-free access to the conference or function room
Ensuring that conference and function rooms have step-free access allows all attendees, including those using wheelchairs, to participate in events without barriers. For example, a step-free conference room entrance ensures that everyone can easily enter and engage in meetings or events.
Have accessible seating areas in theatrette
Providing designated accessible seating areas in a theater or theatrette ensures that individuals using wheelchairs or mobility aids have comfortable, easy-to-reach spots with a good view. For instance, reserving front-row spaces for wheelchair users allows them to enjoy performances or presentations fully.
Have lifts with enough space for people using a mobility aid to enter and turn around to use the lift buttons. Buttons are at accessible height
Installing lifts that are spacious enough for wheelchairs or mobility aids to maneuver comfortably, with buttons at an accessible height, ensures that all visitors can use the lift independently. For example, a lift with a roomy interior and buttons located at 900mm-1100mm height makes it accessible to everyone.
Have doorways which are easy to open and have lever handles
Designing doorways that are easy to open, using lever handles, and measuring at least 850mm wide when open ensures that individuals using wheelchairs or mobility aids can pass through with ease. For example, installing lever handles on doors and ensuring they aren't too heavy makes entry simpler for all guests.
Have an accessible public toilet which is unlocked
Providing an unlocked, accessible public toilet ensures that visitors with disabilities can use the facilities without needing assistance or searching for a key, making the space more welcoming and user-friendly.
Have a wheelchair accessible toilet / shower and change room
Offering wheelchair-accessible toilets, showers, and changing rooms with features like wider doorways, grab rails, and roll-in showers allows individuals with mobility challenges to use these facilities comfortably and safely. For example, a sports center with an accessible changing room makes it easier for everyone to enjoy activities.
Provide wheelchair access to spa/gym
Ensuring wheelchair access to spa and gym facilities, such as by having ramps, wide doorways, and accessible equipment, allows all visitors to participate in wellness activities. For example, a gym with a ramp at the entrance and accessible workout machines caters to individuals of all abilities.
Have wheelchair accessible picnic tables
Providing picnic tables with 720mm knee clearance and a maximum height of 800mm ensures that individuals using wheelchairs can comfortably sit and enjoy the space. For example, a park with accessible picnic tables allows all guests to share meals and socialise outdoors.
Have wheelchair access to amusements and activities including boats and bush trails
Offering wheelchair access to various amusements and activities, such as boats, bush trails, and amusement rides, ensures that all guests can participate and enjoy the experiences. For instance, a bush trail with a wide, firm path allows visitors using wheelchairs to explore nature comfortably.
Have a wheelchair/scooter charging station in an accessible location
Providing a charging station for wheelchairs and scooters in an accessible location allows individuals to recharge their mobility aids conveniently, ensuring they can continue to enjoy their visit. For example, a shopping center with a charging point near the entrance ensures that visitors can easily recharge if needed.
Provide beach matting and beach wheelchairs for people to access the water
Offering beach matting and specially designed beach wheelchairs enables individuals with mobility impairments to enjoy the beach and access the water, creating an inclusive recreational environment. For example, a coastal resort providing beach wheelchairs and matting helps ensure that everyone can participate in beach activities.
Provide portable hoist
Supplying a portable hoist allows for easy transfer of individuals with mobility impairments, enhancing their comfort and safety when moving between locations. For instance, a hotel offering a portable hoist ensures that guests with significant mobility needs can be safely lifted into bed or bath.
Provide portable commode chairs
Having portable commode chairs available ensures that individuals with mobility challenges can have convenient access to toilet facilities, even in areas where permanent accessible toilets are not available. For example, a festival providing portable commode chairs ensures that all attendees can access sanitary facilities comfortably.
Provide portable ramps
Offering portable ramps helps to overcome small steps or barriers, making various locations more accessible for individuals using wheelchairs or other mobility aids. For example, a historic building using portable ramps at entrances and interior steps allows visitors with mobility challenges to explore the site.
Have at least one wheelchair accessible parking space with wheelchair accessible signage clearly displayed
Providing a designated wheelchair-accessible parking space with clear signage ensures that individuals with mobility challenges have convenient and safe access to parking. International standards for Wheelchair accessible parking are 3200mm wide x 2500 mm long.
Provide valet parking
Offering valet parking services can enhance accessibility for guests with mobility challenges, allowing them to be dropped off and picked up directly at the entrance without needing to park and navigate from a distance.
Have wheelchair accessible transport options available in the general vicinity
Ensuring the availability of wheelchair-accessible transport options and providing clear information about these services, including operator contact details and links, helps visitors with mobility needs plan their journey. For example, a tourist attraction that offers information about accessible local bus routes and taxi services supports convenient travel for all guests.
