This article provides detailed information for a Participant on how to participate in an multi-level competition.
Note: The document uses the term ‘Levels' for the stages within a competition. Depending on the event, the different stages may be called something else such as ‘Missions’, 'Stages’ etc.
The logic however, to participate in such a competition is same as documented below.
Accessing your Competitions
You can access your competitions from the landing page inside Competitions. Click Enter to enter your competition, as shown in the image below. This will take you to the competition’s waiting bay.
From the competition’s waiting bay you can view the Competition Instructions [1] and the Availability Period [2]. You can join the competition at any stage during the availability period by clicking the Enter Competition [3] button.
Viewing the Challenges
Once inside, you can view the competition’s challenges by clicking on the Challenges[1] tab. A multi level based competition will have its different stages/levles/missions in a Level sidebar[2]. You can select which level you want to attempt and the details of the selected level will get populated on the screen. The levels are not sequential(not dependent on each other) and can be attempted in any order that you wish.
The Top score bar[3] shows your progress in the overall competition- Total Points scored, First Bloods(challenges you were first to solve), and Total Challenges solved.
The Level score bar[4] shows your progress in the active level. It shows number of challenges attempted, challenges solved and total points earned for that level. You can further expand the progress bar by clicking the Dropdown button[5].
The Level sidebar also displays the progress in that level in each level card.
The open drawer shows a detailed breakdown of your progress in that level. The Progress by Difficulty[1] column shows all the challenges split by difficulty(easy, medium, hard) in a donut chart. Green represents easy, yellow represents medium, and red represents hard. All the unsolved challenges are represented by lighter versions of the colour, and turn dark as they get solved. For example, dark green represents all the easy challenges that are solved, and light green represents all the easy challenges that are not solved.
The Progress by Category[2] column shows all the challenges split in categories like Cryptography, OSINT, DFIR etc. captured in a bar chart, where each bar represents a category. The light coloured segments on the bar represent the unsolved challenges of that category and the dark segments represent the ones that are solved.
The Challenges Table [1] lists all of the challenges in the competition. To search for a specific challenge, click on the Search [2] icon. This will open up a text box that will let you to search for challenges by keyword. To filter challenges based on their Name, Category, Difficulty, Estimated Time to Solve, Status or Attempts, click the Filter [3] button.
To navigate between the different pages of the table, click the Arrow [1] buttons.
Using Challenge Finder
What is the Challenge Finder?
Challenge Finder is a tool that helps you search for challenges across all levels in a multi-level competition. Instead of navigating through each level individually, you can use Challenge Finder to apply filters and see where specific challenges are located. Levels containing challenges matching your search criteria will be spotlighted for you, saving you time in your competition.
📖 Note: Challenge Finder is a supplement to level-specific search and filters. It helps you locate challenges across levels before you drill down into each level.
How to Access the Challenge Finder
In a multi-level competition, go to the Challenges tab.
You’ll see the Challenge Finder section near the top of the screen.
Using the Challenge Finder Search Bar
The Challenge Finder search bar allows you to type keywords to match specific details about challenges, such as:
Challenge Names
Proficiency Levels
Points
Specialties
Skills
Statuses
Attempts
Using the Challenge Finder Filter Dropdowns
You can also use Challenge Finder to search for challenges by selecting criteria in the following dropdowns:
Proficiency - search by challenge difficulty (i.e. Novice, Advanced Beginner, Competent, Proficient, Expert).
Specialty - search by challenge specialty (i.e. Detection, Engineering, Investigation, Intelligence, Penetration, Investigation).
Status - search by challenge completion status (i.e. Incomplete, Opened, Started, Attempted, Completed).
Each dropdown allows multiple selections and includes a Select All option. When you make selections, you’ll see a small numbered chip next to each dropdown showing how many options are selected.
Navigating Challenge Finder Search Results
After applying search terms or filter selections, each level button will display the total number of challenges that match your criteria. Levels with no matches will show a "0" so you can easily see which levels to skip based on your search.
When you click into a level with matching challenges from your search, a new column will appear on the left of the challenges table, marking each matching challenge with a Challenge Finder icon for easy identification.
Key Tips for Using Challenge Finder
Quickly spotlight challenges across levels: If you need to quickly identify specific challenges across levels (e.g. all Novice challenges), make sure to use Challenge Finder to spotlight which levels contain relevant challenges. This saves you time by reducing the need to manually search each level.
Combine filters for specific results: Use multiple filters at once to narrow down your matching results. For example, if you’re looking for Novice challenges in Engineering or Detection that are Incomplete, select these options in each dropdown to locate specific matches quickly.
Note that selections reset upon exiting: Challenge Finder does not retain selections if you navigate away from the Challenges tab. You’ll need to reapply your search terms and filters when you return to the tab.
Viewing and Solving Challenges
To view a challenge, click on the Row of the challenge you wish to view. This will open up the challenge on the side of your screen. Once the challenge has been opened, you will be able to see key details about the challenge, such as its description. When you're ready to start attempting the challenge, click Start Solving.
The Activity [1] section lets you communicate with your team. For example, you can tell your team that you are working on the challenge, or that you need help. The Description [2] section provides information about the challenge. You can download any attachments associated with the challenge by clicking on the relevant link in the Attachments [3] section.
📖 Note: the Attachments section will not display in a challenge if there are no attachments for the challenge.
Attempting Lab Challenges
Once you have clicked Start Solving on a lab challenge, you'll see a Lab Details section. By default, your lab will be in Not Started status. Each lab has a duration of 2 hours.
Click Start Lab to spin up a lab instance to begin working on. Once you start your lab instance, the Lab Time Remaining timer will begin counting down from 2 hours.
Once you have started your lab, your lab will be in Ready status. The lab timer will begin countdown from 2 hours, and you'll see an Extend Lab button and a Reset Lab button. These buttons will aways be present when your lab is in Ready status (and when you have time left in the Lab Time Remaining countdown timer).
You can extend your lab as many times as you wish during the event. Extending a lab simply resets the countdown timer for your current lab instance back to 2 hours, allowing you to continue working on your current lab instance with progress being unaffected. Although you can extend your lab infinitely during the event, the maximum time available on the Lab Time Remaining countdown timer at any given point is 2 hours. You won't be able to stack more time on time of this maximum by extending your lab. For instance, if you extend your lab while there is 1 hour 50 minutes remaining, your lab time will be reset to 2 hours, not 3 hours 50 minutes.
If the lab countdown timer reaches 0, your lab instance will be deleted (all progress will be lost). You'll be able to restart your lab again to continue work. However, once you start your lab again, a new lab instance will be deployed with all progress being refreshed - you won't be able to recover your previous lab instance once its lab timer runs out, so please watch the timer carefully while you attempt the lab and extend your instance if required to avoid losing your progress.
If you wish to manually deploy a new lab instance for yourself (i.e. before this is automatically done when the lab timer runs out) while working on a lab challenge (if for example, you have run into an error or simply wish to reset your lab progress), click Reset Lab. This will delete your current lab instance (and any progress along with it). Upon a brief loading period, your lab will return to Not Started status. You'll be able to start your lab again by clicking Start Lab. Once your lab has started up and is in Ready status again, you'll be able to begin working on your new lab instance.
If you would like to restart your current lab instance (rather than reset your lab to get a new lab instance), please raise a support ticket. The FifthDomain team will be able to restart your current lab instance for you.
Note that you can interact with labs in lab challenges for the entire duration of the competition, or until you have solved the challenge (i.e. submitted the correct flag).
Submitting Flags
Once ready, you can enter a solution for a challenge by typing in the Submit Flag [4] text box and then clicking Submit [5]. You will then receive a message that states whether your solution was correct or incorrect.
Viewing the Competition Instructions
To view the competition’s instructions, click the Overview tab, as shown in the image below. This page will display the instructions for the competition.
Viewing the Scoreboard
To view the scoreboard, click the Scoreboard[1] tab, as shown in the image below. Note, your competition organiser may decide to hide the scoreboard. In this case, you will be unable to view the scoreboard.
To see how your progress compared to others, look at the Score Progression[2] chart . You can hover over charts to see who captured a flag and when. To check where you are ranked in the competition, look at the Leaderboard[3] table.
