πŸ“– Note: This article explains what training activities are, and how users assigned to training activities within their organisation can attempt them.

What are Training Activities?

Training Activities are a type of event on the FifthDomain platform which are tailored to a single individual. Training activities can be custom created (based on tailored challenge recommendations) for affiliated users in an organisation with an assigned work role and, are designed to help them fulfil any unfulfilled skill requirements of their work role.

Am I eligible to be assigned Training Activities?

You can have training activities created for and assigned to you if you're affiliated to an organisation on the platform, you have a work role assigned to you by that organisation, and you're part of a squad within the organisation. For more information on having a work role assigned to you, click here.

Who can create and manage Training Activities for me?

Only your Squad Managers can create and manage Training Activities for you on your Affiliated User Profile. As detailed in this article, there are five permissions that can access your Affiliated User Profile. However, only your Squad Managers can create, view and edit your Training Activities.

Entering a Training Activity

If you've been assigned a training activity, it will appear on your Home page. Simply go to your Participant Home Page. In the Assigned Events table, any training activities will be marked with a blue training icon [1]. Click Enter [2] to open the training activity you wish to attempt.

The first time you enter each training activity, you'll be directed to a waiting bay page, where you can see the Training Activity Instructions message [1] written by the creator of the training activity. This message provides you with details such as the purpose of the training activity, its rules, and ways to access technical support. You'll be able to access this message any time during the training activity.

You will also be able to see the time and date the training activity is Available Until [2] for you to attempt. When you're ready, click Enter Training Activity [3].

πŸ“– Note: you can enter and leave a training activity as many times as you like until you have solved every challenge, or the scheduled end time and date has been reached. You do not need to complete your attempt in one sitting.

Navigating the Training Activity Challenges Tab

Once you have entered the training activity, you will be directed to the Challenges tab [1] within it. Here, you will be able to see and attempt all challenges included in the training activity.

At the top of the page, you can see the number of points [2] you have achieved in the training activity, out of the total points available. You can also see the number of challenges you have solved [3], out of the total number of challenges available.

Below this, you will see the VPN Configuration section. To use VPN configuration in the training activity, you can either download a VPN configuration file [1] or copy a VPN configuration link [2]. The process for using VPN configuration in training activities is the same as for competitions. Click here to read more about using VPN in your training activity.

If the creator of your training activity has enabled a Jump Box for you, you will be able to see a Start Jump Box button. Click this to initiate the process of connecting to a Jump Box for your training activity. The process for using a Jump Box in a training activity is also the same as for competitions. Click here to read more about using a Jump Box for your training activity.

In the Challenges table, you'll see a list of every challenge included in the training for you to complete. For each challenge, you'll be able to see the following details:

  • Challenge Name

  • Professional Specialty

  • Points

  • Skills

  • Attempt Status (Incomplete, Opened, Started, Attempted, and Completed)

  • Number of Attempts

To sort the table and find specific challenges, use the search bar [1], and/or the filter function [2] to sort on any of the table columns.

To attempt a challenge, click the challenge to open it. Once the challenge has been opened, you will be able to see key details about the challenge, such as its description. When you're ready to start attempting the challenge, click Start Solving.

Once you do, you'll be able to access all of the challenges's resources, such as any attachments and labs.

Attempting Lab Challenges

If you have clicked Start Solving on a lab challenge, you'll see a Lab Details section. By default, your lab will be in Not Started status. Each lab has a duration of 2 hours.

Click Start Lab to spin up a lab instance to begin working on. Once you start your lab instance, the Lab Time Remaining timer will begin counting down from 2 hours.

Once you have started your lab, your lab will be in Ready status. The lab timer will begin countdown from 2 hours, and you'll see an Extend Lab button and a Reset Lab button. These buttons will aways be present when your lab is in Ready status (and when you have time left in the Lab Time Remaining countdown timer).

You can extend your lab as many times as you wish during the event. Extending a lab simply resets the countdown timer for your current lab instance back to 2 hours, allowing you to continue working on your current lab instance with progress being unaffected. Although you can extend your lab infinitely during the event, the maximum time available on the Lab Time Remaining countdown timer at any given point is 2 hours. You won't be able to stack more time on time of this maximum by extending your lab. For instance, if you extend your lab while there is 1 hour 50 minutes remaining, your lab time will be reset to 2 hours, not 3 hours 50 minutes.

If the lab countdown timer reaches 0, your lab instance will be deleted (all progress will be lost). You'll be able to restart your lab again to continue work. However, once you start your lab again, a new lab instance will be deployed with all progress being refreshed - you won't be able to recover your previous lab instance once its lab timer runs out, so please watch the timer carefully while you attempt the lab and extend your instance if required to avoid losing your progress.

If you wish to manually deploy a new lab instance for yourself (i.e. before this is automatically done when the lab timer runs out) while working on a lab challenge (if for example, you have run into an error or simply wish to reset your lab progress), click Reset Lab. This will delete your current lab instance (and any progress along with it). Upon a brief loading period, your lab will return to Not Started status. You'll be able to start your lab again by clicking Start Lab. Once your lab has started up and is in Ready status again, you'll be able to begin working on your new lab instance.

If you would like to restart your current lab instance (rather than reset your lab to get a new lab instance), please raise a support ticket. The FifthDomain team will be able to restart your current lab instance for you.

Note that you can interact with labs in lab challenges for the entire duration of the event, or until you have solved the challenge (i.e. submitted the correct flag).

Submitting Flags

When you're ready to submit an answer, type it in the Submit Flag box [1], and click Submit [2]. Challenge answers need to be typed in a FLAG{text} format. Once you have submitted an answer, you will receive a popup message notifying you whether you got the correct answer.

You can attempt a challenge as many times as you like, until you input the correct answer. Just note that the number of attempts you make on each challenge will be visible to those who are viewing and managing your training activity.

πŸ“– Note: As you progress through the challenges within the training activity, you will be able to see your skills update in your Cyber Skills Cortex on the Participant Home Page, and on your Skills Overview Page.

Your progress toward addressing skill gaps will be visible to those that can view your Affiliated User Profile. For more information on what they can see in regards to your work role, read this guide.

Viewing a Training Activity Overview Tab

Click the Overview tab [1] in your training activity to access the Training Activity Instructions message [2] you initially saw in the training activity waiting bay.

You will still be able to see the number of points [3] you have obtained, and the number of challenges you have solved [4] from this tab.

Completing a Training Activity

Once you have solved every challenge within the training activity, or the end time and date for the training activity has been reached, you will see the Training Activity Completion Message [1].

From this page, click Home [2] to return to your Participant Home Page.

πŸ“– Note: after you have solved every challenge in a training activity, or the end date and time for the training activity has been reached, you will no longer be able to enter the training activity from your Home page.
