The Markbook: gateway to every piece of student activity in a Subject

Track all student work and review progress from a single page.

Updated this week

The Markbook (called the Gradebook in North America) is a grid view of every student and every Session in a Subject. It is the fastest way to get an overview of class activity and drill down into individual student work.

Access the Markbook by clicking the green Markbook button in the Subject header.

Understand student activity at a glance

The grid displays Sessions as columns and students as rows. Each cell shows that student's status on that Session. A legend in the upper left corner explains all icons.

Status icons:

  • Empty blue circle: the student has opened the Session but not done any work

  • Partially filled blue dot: the student has started work; fills in as each question is attempted

  • Solid blue dot: the student has completed the Session but not submitted it

  • Green dot: the student has submitted the Session; can be partially filled to indicate completion level

  • Grey padlock: work has been collected and locked, or the student submitted an assessed Session and cannot take it back

  • Grey tick: answers and feedback have been released

  • Curly arrow: resubmission has been requested

  • Red clock: a due date is set and the student's submission is late

  • Human figure with X: the student has been marked absent and has not opened the Session

  • Orange stripe at top of column: the Session is an assessment; shows the student's overall mark once answers are released

  • Blank cell: the student has not opened the Session; click to mark them absent

View details about individual student work

Click a status icon to open a popup with the following information: the Session's status (e.g. in progress, submitted, collected), the date and time of the most recent activity, a late flag if overdue, any summary feedback you have left, a link to the student's worksheet, and controls to collect the work, release answers, or request resubmission.

If a cell is blank, the student has not yet opened the Session. A status icon will appear in real time once they do.

Click the X in the top right of the popup to close it and continue browsing.

Open and close unit folders

Folders in the Markbook can be opened and closed. Closing Folders you are not currently working in reduces load time and horizontal scrolling.

A closed Folder shows its title shaded in blue with Sessions hidden. Click the (+) icon below the title to open it. An open Folder shows Sessions visible. Click the (-) icon to close it.

A closed Folder will display the Folder's title shaded in blue and its Sessions will be hidden. Click the (+) icon below the Folder's title to open the Folder.

An open Folder will display the Folder's title shaded in blue and its Sessions will be visible. Click the (-) icon below the Folder's title to close it.

Pro tip: Folders and Sessions appear in the Markbook in the same order as on the Sessions page. Rearranging them on the Sessions page also rearranges them in the Markbook.

See more details about a specific activity

Session titles in the Markbook are truncated to keep columns a standard width. Hover over a title to see the full name. Click the title to open the Session in Prepare mode.

Collect or release to whole groups of students

Click the (...) button below a Session title in the relevant Class row to access Class controls:

  • Collect all unfinished work: locks the Session for all students in the Class except those marked absent;

  • Release all answers: shows students their marks, model answers, and feedback. Only applies to submitted or collected work. Students still working or who have not started are not affected;

  • Request resubmission from all: only applies to submitted, collected, or answer-released work. Students still working or who have not started are not affected.

Mark a student absent

When you hover over a blank cell in the Markbook (in a column where at least one other student has started the Session), an option to mark the student absent appears. Click the cell to add the absent icon.

Clicking the absent icon opens a popup with a timestamp of when the student was marked absent, an option to mark them as present, and an option to collect the work. Collecting creates a blank copy of the Session for marking and locks the Session for that student.

The absent icon is automatically replaced by an in-progress icon when the student opens the Session.

Download the Markbook as a spreadsheet

Click the Export button in the top right corner to download the Markbook as an XLSX or CSV file. This is useful for further analysis or for uploading to a learning management system. See Download marks and feedback as a spreadsheet for more detail.
