Star Ratings for Accommodation

Step-by-step guide for administrators to update and verify star ratings on accommodation profiles in the our platform.

Updated over a week ago

Star Ratings have long served as a trusted benchmark in Australian tourism—signalling quality and consistency to travellers across the country. As administrators, our shared responsibility is to ensure every accommodation profile displays up-to-date, verified star ratings. This protects both our sector’s reputation and each operator’s individual story.

Administrators manage Star Ratings information for Accommodation providers to:

  • Ensure ratings are issued independently and are not self-declared.

  • Maintain consistency and credibility across accommodation profiles.

  • Protect the integrity of the star rating program and the shared reputation of the accommodation sector.

It's important that only valid, verified star ratings from Star Ratings Australia are published. Self-rated properties must not be updated in this section.

What is Star Ratings Australia?

Star Ratings Australia is the official system for independently assessing and awarding star ratings to accommodation providers. These ratings—ranging from 1 to 5 stars—help travellers identify quality, comfort, cleanliness, and consistency, giving confidence at every stage of their booking journey. Only verified properties can display these stars, ensuring fairness and industry-wide trust.

How to update a Star Rating in a Profile

  1. Log In: Log in to ATDW

  2. Open Profile: Use the Admin tab to search and open the relevant Accommodation profile (See: How to Search for a Profile)

  3. Star Ratings: Once in the profile, use the sub menu to navigate to the Star Rating page. You'll find this under Admin (shown below).

  4. Update Star Rating: If the property has a valid star rating, use the checkbox to tick "My accommodation has received a star rating". Move your mouse over the stars. As you do, each star will turn black to preview your selection. Select the correct number of stars to match the Star Ratings Australia result. You can also choose a half star by hovering or clicking between two stars.

To remove a star rating, untick the "My accommodation has received a star rating" box. Include a note in the Audit Trail explaining the reason for removal (see: Audit Trail)

Multiple Star Ratings for one property

If there are multiple accommodation types at the property with various Star Ratings, enter the highest star rating. Then, work with the business to update the Product Description to specify ratings for each type.

For example:

  • The Beachfront Villa is rated 4.5 stars and Budget Rooms hold a 3 star rating—both independently assessed by Star Ratings Australia.

  • The Main Lodge boasts a 5 star rating, with Family Cabins awarded 4 stars. These classifications reflect the ongoing commitment to quality, as certified by Star Ratings Australia.

  • The Luxury Retreat is officially rated 5 stars; standard guest rooms hold a 3.5 star rating. Each rating is validated and published through the Star Ratings Australia program.
