To support schools in regional, rural, and remote areas, the NSW Department of Education has partnered with ClassCover to launch the Teachers in the Field – Classroom Cover Stream. This program uses the Hub & Spoke model to streamline the booking process and ensure casuals are available where and when they’re needed.
This article will guide schools on how the Hub & Spoke Model works and how it is applied to their school.
What is the Hub & Spoke Model?
Under this model:
A Hub School manages casual bookings for a group of nearby schools (known as Spoke Schools).
Casuals are based at the Hub School and may be booked to work across spoke schools within approximately an hour’s travel.
The goal is to ensure consistent coverage while minimising travel time for casual staff.
💡 Note: Hub Admins are the designated school users who review and approve bookings before they’re sent to casuals.
How the Booking Process Works
Here’s how bookings flow in a Hub & Spoke setup:
Your school submits a pre-confirmed booking via ClassCover (either on the app or web).
Once approved:
The booking request is sent to the selected casual(s).
You’ll be notified once the casual confirms the booking.
How You’ll Be Notified
You’ll receive a booking confirmation via:
Push notification (if the app is installed)
Email
SMS (if the app is not installed)
