Troubleshoot Stile and Stile X

Updated this week

This article covers common errors in Stile and what to do if you encounter them.

Stile won't recognise my email address

When you enter your email at login, Stile checks whether your school uses Single Sign-on (SSO) and whether the email is tied to a Stile account.

If Stile shows "Could not find your Stile account", check your spelling first. If the email is definitely correct:

  • Students should ask their teacher to confirm the exact email address listed on the Students page and log in using that;

  • Teachers should try any other email address they use at school to see if their login is associated with different credentials.

Once logged in, you can update the email address to the correct one via your Profile settings page.

Stile logged into someone else's account

This happens when someone forgets to log out of a shared device. Always log out of shared computers and tablets after each session.

If you see an account that isn't yours at login, click That's not me. Then log out of Stile by clicking your name in the top right corner and selecting Log out. Sign out of the device completely, log back in with the correct credentials, and then log in to Stile.

Permission Denied - 403 error

This error appears when you try to access a page you don't have permission to view. It may also appear as "Sorry, we couldn't find that subject."

  • Students: This usually means the Session is hidden. Ask your teacher to release it to you.

  • Teachers and Lab techs: You are not a teacher or co-teacher in that Subject. Ask the colleague who shared the link to add you as a co-teacher.

Something went wrong or Uh oh! error

These are general errors with a wide range of causes. Try the general troubleshooting steps at the bottom of this article first. If the error persists, contact Stile Support with as much detail as possible.

The iPad app is not working

The dedicated Stile iPad app (not Stile X) was retired at the end of 2020 and is no longer supported. Using it may result in loss of student work. Uninstall the app and access Stile at stileapp.com via Safari or Chrome instead.

The Stile X app is not working

Check for updates in the App Store or Google Play Store and install the latest version. Also confirm that the workbook QR code has been scanned and the workbook appears in the app's collection.

My subjects are gone and I'm being told to enter a class code

This almost always means you've logged in with the wrong email address, creating a second empty Stile account.

  1. Click your name in the top right corner and note the email address on the account

  2. Click Log out

  3. Log back in using your other school email address

If your Subjects still don't appear, contact Stile Support with your school name and the names of any Subjects or co-teachers you can recall.

Students or Sessions are missing from the Markbook

Check the following:

  • The Markbook may be filtered, or a Folder may be closed. See The Markbook: gateway to every piece of student activity in a Subject for details.

  • The student may have a second account with their work in it. Contact Stile Support to merge the accounts.

  • There may be duplicate copies of the Session in different unit folders. Check the Sessions page to find the copy the students actually worked in.

  • An entire Class missing may indicate it was accidentally archived. See Create, archive, and manage Classes for steps to restore it.

Something else in Stile isn't working right

Try these steps in order before contacting Stile Support.

1. Refresh the page

Press Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac) for a hard refresh that also clears the page cache.

2. Clear your browsing data

  1. Chrome: chrome://settings/clearBrowserData

  2. Edge: edge://settings/clearBrowserData

  3. Safari: Safari menu > Clear History

  4. Firefox: History menu > Clear Recent History

3. Update and restart your browser

  1. Chrome: chrome://settings/help

  2. Edge: edge://settings/help

  3. Safari: System Preferences > Software Update

  4. Firefox: about:preferences (Firefox Updates is in the General section)

Restart the browser after updating, then return to Stile and check if the issue is resolved.

4. Disable extensions or go incognito

Browser extensions such as ad blockers can interfere with Stile. Test in an incognito or private window, or disable extensions and refresh. If Stile works without the extension, the extension is the cause.

5. Restart your computer

Many issues are resolved by a full restart.

If the issue persists...

Contact Stile Support with:

  • Screenshots or a screen recording of the issue

  • A description of where it's occurring, or a direct link to the Session, Subject, or Markbook

  • Whether Stile Support is permitted to access your account while investigating

  • What steps you have already tried from the list above
