The Video widget embeds a video into a Session for students to watch individually, or for you to present in Teach mode. It is not a question. Pair it with a Written response or Multiple-choice question widget to prompt a student response, and use it with the Side-by-side layout widget.
Students can also upload their own videos in their responses via the Open response question.
Option 1: Upload a custom video file
Drag the Video widget into the Session from the content bar;
Click Upload a file to browse your computer, or Microsoft OneDrive to browse cloud storage;
Alternatively, drag the video file directly into the widget from your desktop or folder.
Most video file formats are supported. Uploaded videos automatically generate closed captions, which each viewer can enable or disable in the video settings.
Option 2: Embed a video from YouTube or Vimeo
Drag the Video widget into the Session from the content bar;
Type keywords into the search bar to find a video, then click a thumbnail to preview it;
Click Use this video to confirm your selection
If you already know the URL, paste it directly into the search bar. Captions for embedded videos are sourced from the platform and are not generated by Stile.
Warning: Many schools block student access to YouTube. If YouTube is blocked at your school, it will not play within Stile either. Use an uploaded video file instead, or ask your IT team to allow the video URL to pass through the firewall.
Trim the video
Below the video is a trim bar with draggable handles at each end. Drag the handles inward to set the start and end points, or type specific timestamps directly. Preview the video while adjusting to confirm exactly what students will see.
Add a caption
Type directly onto the Caption line below the video to add a source credit or note (e.g. timestamps, production company). The caption appears below the video in light, italicised text.
When you are done, click Done to save all changes.
Using the video with students
Students watching individually have access to all standard video player controls including fullscreen. Trimmed videos stop automatically at the end point you set.
To pair the video with a note-taking space, use the Side-by-side layout widget to place it alongside a Written response question.
Remote teaching note: If using Teach mode over video conferencing, make sure your audio is shared when screen sharing so students can hear the video. Test this before class!
Troubleshooting
YouTube is blocked for students: Play the video at the front of the classroom if you have YouTube access, or ask your IT team if specific YouTube URLs can be whitelisted. You could also set the video as a flipped learning task for students to watch at home.
Web filters (e.g. Zscaler): Some filters require users to log in to their school IDs before accessing YouTube. This may need to be repeated daily. Check with your IT team.
Uploaded videos not playing: Share the Stile IT Onboarding checklist with your IT team to ensure the school network is correctly configured.
One or two students having issues: The problem is likely browser or device related. Direct them to Troubleshoot Stile and Stile X for quick fixes.
