Manager Roles Permissions Guide

This article guides you in selecting appropriate permissions for your organization's managers, tailored to your specific use cases

By understanding the various use cases and corresponding permissions associated with different managerial roles, Admins and Managers can ensure that the right individuals have the appropriate access to effectively carry out their responsibilities.

Roles available on FifthDomain platform

There are 3 main roles available on FD platform. The permissions available for each of these roles vary as following:

Role 1: Admin

Administrator is a key role responsible for the overall management of all aspects within the organization. Any user who is assigned the role of Admin has all the permissions available on the platform.

Role 2: Manager

A manager within an organization is an individual entrusted with specific responsibilities. The permissions assigned to managers vary based on their respective roles and duties. To know more, please refer to the detailed information provided in the Manager Permissions section below.

Role 3: Participant

User invited to participate in events(Courses, Competitions and Assessments) on FD platform should be assigned this role. A participant can be given “create” permission in certain circumstances.

List of Manager Permissions on FifthDomain platform

As admins, or Manager with Manage Managers permissions, you can assign appropriate permissions when inviting a manager, or when editing a manager’s permissions via Manage Users page. You can give one or more customized permissions to a manager, apart from the default permissions. Following permissions are available for a manager:

Default Manager Permissions:

  1. Participate: This allows the manager to Participate in courses they are invited to.

  2. Manage Profile: This allows the manager to change their password, access support, access and edit their profile

  3. View Users: Allows them to view all users within your organization’s account(including registered and invited users. Note that they cannot edit permissions for these users or delete these users.

Customized Manager Permissions:

  1. Create: Let’s them view Organization content library and create/edit content(Tasks/Challenges, Labs, VMs, Containers, Quizzes)

  2. Manage Training: Let’s them create/edit events(Courses, Competitions and Assessments) and invite users to these events.

  3. Manage Groups: Let’s them create, edit and delete Groups

  4. Manage Participants: Let’s them add/remove participants and edit Participant permissions via Manage Users page

  5. Manage Managers: Let’s them add/remove managers and edit Manager permissions via Manage Users page

  6. View Insights: Let’s them view all events including insights(cannot edit them), use chat feature in courses, and view Dashboards

  7. Test Content: Let’s them access, and test draft content

  8. Manage Tags: Let’s them create/edit/archive tags in Tag Directory

Use-cases

For the following common use-cases, you can assign these listed role and permissions to the users.

Use Case 1: Organization administrator

Role : ADMIN

Required permissions: Granted all by default

The Organization Administrator is a key role responsible for the overall management of all aspects within the organization. As the highest level of authority, the Organization Administrator possesses comprehensive control and has all permissions granted by default. This role oversees various managerial functions, including user management, maintaining the permissions of other organization managers, managing the content library, and handling ownership-related tasks.


Use Case 2: Content Creator

A content creator is someone in your organization who needs to create content like Tasks/Challenges and course quizzes and/or upload Labs, VMs, Containers.

Role : MANAGER

Suggested permissions:

  • Create Permission: This will allow the user to access Manage Challenges, Labs, VMs, Containers, Quizzes pages from where they can create respective content pieces.

  • Test Permission: This will allow a manager to test unpublished content. For example using Labs in Test mode.


Use Case 3: Event Manager/Course-coordinator

An Event Manager is someone in your organization who will be responsible for managing Competitions, Courses and Assessments including creation of these events, editing events, inviting participants to events etc

Role : MANAGER

Suggested permissions:

  • Manage Training: This will allow the manager to create and edit all event types on FD platform including Courses, Competitions and Assessments. This allows managers to view event related insights and participant progress and manage following details

    • Start and end time for an event

    • Event type for example Team or solo Competitions and Assessments

    • Tasks/Challenges and modules within assessments, competitions and courses respectively

    • Ability to define and control access to the lab prototypes for an event.

  • Manage Groups: This will allow managers to create and edit groups. Groups can be used for following cases:

    • Groups can be added as teams in team-based competitions and assessments

    • Groups can be helpful in inviting unregistered participants to a course.

  • Managing Participants: This will allow managers to invite participants from Manage Users page.


Use Case 4: Master of Ceremony(MC) for a CTF

As a Master of Ceremony, you would need to give real time update of how participants are progressing through a live competition.

Role : MANAGER

Suggested permission:

  • View Insights: This will allow the manager to have access to competition dashboards, and competition scoreboard where they can see overall score progression and top participants at any point during a competition.


Use Case 4: Course Mentor

A course mentor is someone who provides mentorship to students for a course.

Role : MANAGER

Suggested permission:

  • View Insights: This will allow a manager to view all details of a course, and have access to one-to-one chat feature with students to assist them through a course if they need help.


Use Case 5: Content Manger(Org manager)

This is a manager who needs to create content or manage content in your organization. They may be someone who is the content expert, maintains or organizes content(challenges/tasks, Labs, VMs, Containers, Quizzes) for events(Competitions, Courses, and Assessments)

Role : MANAGER

Suggested permissions:

  • Create: This will allow the user to access Manage Challenges, Labs, VMs, Containers, Quizzes pages from where they can create respective content pieces.

  • Manage Tags: This will allow the user to apply tags to challenges to better organize the content. With this permission, the manager can create, edit and archive tags in your organization.
