This article provides detailed information for an Admin or Manager with ‘Manage Training’ permission on how to create and edit a multi-level competition, including how to set up multi-flag levels.
📖 Note: The document uses the term ‘Levels’ for the stages within a competition. Depending on the event, the different stages may be called something else, such as ‘Missions’ or ‘Stages’. The logic to create such a competition is the same as documented below.
📖 Note: The steps that are the same for every competition — competition name, description and story, availability, Advanced Networking Features, filtering challenges, and competition messaging — are covered in Creating Single-Level Competitions (Individual or Team-Based), linked at the end of this article. This article covers only what differs for multi-level and multi-flag competitions.
What Multi-Level and Multi-Flag Mean
In a multi-level competition, challenges are divided into numbered levels so that participants work through the competition in stages rather than seeing everything at once. Multi-level is available for both Individual-Based and Team-Based competitions.
A multi-flag level is one where the challenges assigned to it are presented to participants as a single mission with several flags to capture, rather than as separate challenges. You choose which levels are multi-flag, and any level you do not choose behaves as an ordinary level.
📖 Note: Multi-flag is only available when the Multi-level toggle is switched on. Once it is, a Multi-flag selector appears on the Challenges page, where you choose which levels are multi-flag as you assign challenges to them.
Creating a Multi-Level Multi-Flag Competition
You can choose whether to create an Individual-Based or a Team-Based competition using the Competition Type radio dials, and fill out the competition details as you normally would. To create a multi-level competition, switch on the Multi-level toggle [1]. The Specify number of levels [2] field then becomes enabled, and you enter the number of levels to be created here.
Choosing Which Levels Are Multi-Flag
On the Challenges page, the number of levels you set is displayed above the challenges table, alongside a Multi-flag [1] dropdown. This defaults to None, meaning that no level in the competition is multi-flag.
Click the Multi-flag [1] dropdown to open it, then tick the checkbox next to each level [2] you want to make multi-flag. You can select as many or as few levels as you wish.
📖 Note: Only the levels you tick here are treated as multi-flag. Any level left unticked displays its challenges individually, in the usual way.
Assigning Challenges to Levels
Every challenge added to the competition needs to be assigned to a level. Challenges that have not yet been assigned show No level selected in the Level column.
Select the challenges you wish to assign using the Checkboxes next to them, then click the ASSIGN LEVEL [1] dropdown and select the level you want to move them to. The Level [2] column updates to show the level each challenge now belongs to, and the challenges are unchecked. Repeat this until every challenge you want in the competition has been assigned to a level.
The REFRESH CHALLENGES button reloads the challenges table. Use this if challenges have been added or changed in your library while you have had the page open.
When you move on to the next page, a confirmation is displayed showing how many challenges have been added to the competition and how they are distributed across the levels. It is worth reading this before continuing, as it is the quickest way to notice a level you have left empty.
Competition Summary
As a final step before publishing, the summary page shows a Level Details section listing every level in the competition. Levels you have marked as multi-flag carry a Multi-Flag [1] badge; levels that are not multi-flag do not.
The challenges in each level are listed in an accordion. You can expand any level here to check that all challenges are sitting in the right level before you create the competition.
It is worth confirming the following before you publish:
The number of levels matches what you intended, and each level has at least one challenge assigned to it.
The Multi-Flag badge appears on the levels you intended to be multi-flag, and only on those.
Multi-flag levels have enough challenges to work as a mission. A multi-flag level containing a single challenge will not behave differently from an ordinary level.
The competition instructions read correctly for your participants.
Opening a Competition to Edit It
You can edit a multi-level competition after it has been created. From the Events table on the Home page, click the Actions [1] icon next to the competition you want to change, then click View [2].
Editing Competition Details
On the Details tab, click EDIT [1] to make the competition details editable.
You can increase the number of levels in the competition using the Specify number of levels [1] field. When you are finished, click SAVE [2], or CANCEL to discard your changes.
📖 Note: Adding levels does not add challenges to them. Any new level you create will be empty until you assign challenges to it on the Challenges tab.
Editing Challenges and Multi-Flag Levels
The Challenges tab shows the number of levels and which levels are Multi-flag [1], alongside the challenges currently in the competition. Click EDIT [2] to make changes.
In edit mode, the Multi-flag [1] dropdown becomes editable, so you can add or remove multi-flag levels after the competition has been created. The ASSIGN LEVEL [2] dropdown appears for moving challenges between levels, and the Level Order [3] arrows let you change the order challenges appear in within a level. Click SAVE [4] when you are finished, or CANCEL to discard your changes.
📖 Note: Level Order matters on a multi-flag level, as it sets the order the flags are presented to participants within the mission.
Removing or Moving Challenges Between Levels
To remove a challenge from a level, or move an already assigned challenge to a different level, select the challenges you want to change and open the ASSIGN LEVEL dropdown. Select Remove / No level [1] to remove the challenge from its level, or select another level to move it there.
The Level column updates to show No level selected for removed challenges, and the new level number for moved challenges.
📖 Note: On a multi-flag level, participants see a mission rather than a list of separate challenges, with one lab and a single Connor and team chat thread shared across all of its flags. The participant-facing article linked below explains what they will see.
