Question and content types

Updated over a week ago

Widgets are the building blocks of every Stile Session. Each piece of content or question is its own editable widget, added from the Add Content sidebar in Prepare mode.

Content widgets

Content widgets display information. They are not questions and do not require a student response.

Displays formatted text including headings, lists, maths notation, hyperlinks, and glossary definitions. Not editable by students. Text is automatically narrated for accessibility. See Add text to a Session.

Annotate image

Not a question and cannot be marked. Uses the same tools as the Interactive canvas widget. See The Annotate image widget.

Video

Embeds a video from YouTube, Vimeo, or Australian ABC's Behind the News, or uploads a video file directly. Supports trimming and captions. Not a question. Students can upload their own videos via the Open response widget. See Add a video to a Session.

ClickView

Embeds videos from a school's ClickView subscription directly into a Session. Appears as a separate widget from the standard Video widget. Requires an active ClickView subscription. If ClickView does not appear in your content bar, see the ClickView integration article to enable it.

Audio

Adds audio to a Session via file upload or live recording. Not a question and cannot be marked. Students can record their own audio via the Open response widget. See Add audio to a Session.

Table

Displays referential information in a table. Teachers can add and delete rows and columns, apply rich text formatting, upload images, resize cells, and apply cell shading. Not a question and not editable by students. Use the Table question widget if you need students to fill in cells. See The Table widget.

Pro tip: Use the Table widget to build an interactive rubric in your Session. Rubrics are effective formative and summative assessment tools that make expectations explicit for students.

Collaborative widgets

Collaborative widgets are designed for live classroom use and work in real time. They are interactive for students but do not carry any mark/point value.

Live poll

Gauges student opinion or understanding with a multiple-choice poll. Teachers can open and close voting, choose whether results are visible to students, and specify how many options students can select. See Live poll question.

202404-ContentTypes-LivePoll.png

Live brainstorm

Allows students to anonymously contribute ideas to a shared class brainstorm. Teachers can hide responses from other students while contributions are coming in, preventing early answers from influencing others. See Live brainstorm question.

Question widgets

Question widgets accept and store student responses. Teachers can assign marks/points, add feedback, and link curriculum standards. All question text boxes use the same tools as the Text content widget.

Written response

A simple text-based question and answer. Students can respond with text and maths notation only. Must be manually marked. Teachers have access to Stile Intelligence for drafting feedback comments.

Multiple choice question

A question with multiple answer options. Automatically marked. Can provide automatic feedback. Results update in real time in class insights. See Multiple choice question.

202403-ContentTypes-MCQ.png

True or false

A question with only True and False as options. Functions similarly to the Multiple choice widget. Can be automatically marked with automatic feedback. See True or False question.

202403-ContentTypes-TrueFalse.png

Graph

A question where students plot up to three data sets on a graph. Teachers can pre-populate data or leave it blank. Supports line, scatter, and column (bar) graph types. Graph updates in real time as data is entered. See The graph question.

Interactive canvas

A highly versatile question type used for cloze tasks, drag and drop, labelling diagrams, balancing equations, and more. See Interactive canvas question.

202403-ContentTypes-InteractiveCanvas.png

Table question

An interactive, markable table. Students can type into cells that the teacher has left empty. A cell must be completely empty for students to interact with it, including background shading. See The Table widget.

202403-ContentTypes-TableQuestion.png

Student upload

A question where students upload project files of any type, including images, videos, PDFs, PowerPoint slides, and ZIP folders for multiple files. Teachers can assign marks and feedback after reviewing the files. Files cannot be annotated directly in Stile. See Student file upload question.

202403-ContentTypes-StudentUpload.png

Open response

The most flexible question type. Students can answer using any combination of text, file uploads, annotated images, videos, tables, graphs, and audio recordings. The teacher assigns a single overall mark for the question. See Open Response question and How to answer an Open Response question as a student.

Other widgets

Side by side

A layout widget that splits part of the page into two columns. Drag content or question widgets into each column. Common pairings include text next to a video, or an annotated image next to a multiple choice question. Some widgets are not compatible. See Place Session content side by side.

Teacher tip

A text block visible only to teachers. Hidden from students in all views except when a teacher makes it visible in Teach mode. Use it for activity guidance, notes to co-teachers, links to resources, extension/discussion points, or model answer reminders. See Add a teacher tip to a Session.
